Specializing in Attachment and Trauma
Laurel Abts is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a TBRI® practitioner, play therapist, and is certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). She specializes in treating trauma, attachment disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and issues surrounding adoption.
A healthy attachment is the underlying factor in helping a child heal from trauma. Laurel works with both parent and child offering structure and nurturing interventions. Laurel provides a playful, loving and accepting environment.
Through research and training Laurel has developed an attachment program using a neurobiological approach. Children who have been traumatized have an abnormally high level of stress hormones which can impair the growth and development in their brains. Children who develop these neurological deficits struggle with empathy, conscience, trust, affection, impulse control, and affect regulation.
Fusing the research and works of Dr. Karyn Purvis, Dr. David Cross, Bruce Perry, M.D., Dan Siegel, M.D., Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., Daniel Hughes, Ph.D., Gregory Keck, Ph.D., Stephen Porges, Ph.D., Terry Levy, Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., Heather Forbes, Bryan Post, Foster Cline, and many more, Laurel offers an integrated treatment method for healing attachment and trauma.
Her effective treatment strategies include TBRI® techniques, self regulation practices, neurological education, empathy development, neurobiology guided therapy, attunement, trust building, tools of attachment, coping skills, behavior management, problem solving, EMDR, mindfulness and a framework of love and understanding.
